Why Can’t I Feel God’s Presence and Love?

“Why can’t I feel/experience His Presence and Love?  Not emotionally but in my heart? (my State and Sense of BEING)”

Read my article about the questions we ask about God and how we ask them.

Short answer is you can!

Why don’t you?  Or, Why don’t you FEEL like you FEEL God’s presence or EXPERIENCE Him?

Notice how “feeling” is such a key component of this question?

Perhaps it’s because we can’t see God that we must feel Him to experience Him.  At any rate, it’s very important to feel God.

Let’s consider something that Paul spoke from Mars’ Hill to the men of Athens:

Acts 17:24-28

24  God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25  Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26  And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27  That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28  For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. (KJV)

I love these verses because they give us some insight into what Paul knew to be true about God.  He knew that the Lord desires men to seek Him and find Him.  Paul also knew that God wasn’t far from any of us.

We are God’s offspring according to these scriptures.  The creation story states that we are made in God’s image.  This is really saying the same thing.  We are spirit, God is spirit.  We are truly an aspect of God if you will.  A part of God.  Just as you are a part of your parents.

You are not your mom or dad, you are uniquely you.  That spiritual being that you are is in the image of God, your mom, your dad, me and everyone else too for that matter. Pretty amazing isn’t it?

So where is the problem in feeling and experiencing God?

There are a couple things that come into play here.

First of all, we spiritual beings tend to become pretty absorbed in our human experience.  We nearly lose sight of the fact that we are spiritual.  We tie our spiritual experiences to religious activities, and the steps and rules required by our religious systems.  Those things are completely physical and tied to the carnal aspect – our human experience.

When we seek to find God in religious systems, God’s presence seems to be an elusive emotional experience produced by the minds interpretation of external stimuli – such as the quietness of the interior of a church building, the singing of hymns, the observance of others or ourselves making religious commitments/steps such as praying, accepting Jesus, baptism, going into the ministry, etc.

Experiencing God in this way leads us to believe that we may only feel God within some religious context.

The other thing is that we’re largely unaware of our true nature – that of spiritual beings.

We’re very much consumed with the human/physical experience of our life on earth. Most of our time is spent on caring for, providing for, protecting and preserving the physical body.

When we’re focused almost completely on the physical and believing God is experienced in religious contexts we rob ourselves of countless possibilities of truly feeling God.

Learning to be still solves the problem.

When we become still, we remove our attention from the physical.

Tuning into stillness without judgment we find ourselves and God at the same time.

Have you read “Who Told You That You Were Naked?”   This will help you understand judgment and what it does to us.

So experiencing God and feeling Love is really as simple as being still.  Be still and know that I am God, scripture teaches.  It really does work!

If you still struggle with stillness be sure to read the other articles on this site related to being still.

    My biggest question is why I am I here on this planet and for what purpose. with out any guidance or any direct comprehended communication from a higher source or power ( GOD ) then my self or other peoples illusions of truths, opinions and beliefs to reference to for my existence and purpose????? is it we as people need to know why we are here or live in a simpler manner of beliefs and not get so deep with in our selves to find out that answer. Maybe its right in front of us and it is really that simple or just that black and white. I’ve been through some very painful times in my life and I question for what purpose does it really serve why all this pain and constant battle to stay in control for we all have responsibilities to others to keep moving forward no matter what happens. The only thing I can come up with is with out faith it can’t be done. I think the questions and search give us hope and through hope there is purpose and humility that keeps us moving forward. So why can’t I talk to God on a person to person level, I think its that simple we are not supposed to, its not the plan, but through the way of faith will guide us to understand and process why things just happen. At the lowest time in my life I sat with my self and said out loud why am I here I didn’t ask to be here I don’t deserve all this pain and then God finally poked his head out for a brief moment, I experienced this overwhelming sense that something made me out side of my flesh that I belong to something bigger and more powerful then this world. That was a divine moment and had direct communication with God at that moment. I believe I was born again that day and changed my life 180 degree turn and was blessed with a second chance at life Gods way not my way any more. Some people express the bible is out dated and we as people are evolving which we are but, it really is that simple the knowledge is in scripture and always will be.
    May hope give us courage in our lives Gene

    Thanks for the words of encouragement. The fact is that God has first loved us as in John 3:16. We need to be aware that the love of God is paramount thing a borna again christian should be aware of. There are times you face some problems that you will want to asked if God is alive. Yes indeed he is alive, you have to go through the trials or problems for you to stand as a christians.

    To go to the question why can’t i feel God’s presense, due to the fact that sin can cause us not to feel his presence, our body is the temple of God and it must not be defile. When once you’ve sinned against God, you will not have a clear conscience to communicate to God. Unless you confess it, asked for mercy, asked him to come and take over again. When David sinned against God, he was not aware until God sent Nathan to him. There he confesses his sin and wrote Psalm 51. As a born again you need the presense of God always in your life, it is something one can’t do without. You need to activate it for you always to be in you. In him we live, move and have our being, so one can’t do without his presense.

    May he continue to give us understanding of his word.

    I have been hearing. A lot in the last few years
    About how Christ died ? The Jehovah, s Witness
    Said he died on a stake and the Church of God seem
    To agree with them. The word “stauros” was
    Mistranslated from Greek to English as “cross ”
    Who is right?

    Hi Teresa,

    I honestly have not heard anyone question how Christ died and have never given it any thought.

    Therefore I’m not sure who is right!

    And for me it doesn’t matter, but that’s just me.

    To Teresa,
    The Bible clearly states that He died on a cross, and that is the truth and nothing but the truth. The Bible is the Word of God. If you want to know how Christ died, read the Bible (KJV)

    I’m saved but Its not based on feeling loved by God etc it’s based on what Jesus did for me on the cross
    I however have never felt loved by God or his presence and I’m very skeptical of people who Claim they do

    I think it’s somehow in us by nature to be skeptical of the other person’s experience when it does not match our own.

    In religion we are programmed to think that everyone’s experience is the same to a large degree.

    I don’t think that’s accurate at all.
