The Adam and Eve Story

Many people wonder about the significance of the Adam and Eve story found in the first chapters of The Bible.

What does it mean?  How does it apply to believers today?  How does it affect me?  Does it mean I was born in sin?

The story of Adam and Eve is about two people in perfect relationship with each other, their world and their God.  It is about a man and woman in love experiencing life as it is meant to be lived.

It is a story about two people taking a perfect situation/style of living and turning it on it’s head, bringing suffering upon themselves.

You understand, it’s quite a story.  Many people can’t imagine what occurred in that story and yet it’s the experience of every human being – that’s why it’s such a powerful story – that’s also why it’s misunderstood and misinterpreted to give us doctrines such as “original sin”.

Adam and Eve had what is available to every person – perfect situations, relationships – a perfect life – but something was missing – or so they thought.

For some reason they felt like they needed to know everything God knew – and they felt like they didn’t have access to that knowledge.

This thought/feeling was their first error as they were in fellowship with God on a daily basis and could easily ask and know about anything.

Somehow that wasn’t enough – a judgement they made – and therefore they sought a method to gain that knowledge.

They found their method in the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  God had told them not to eat of it so of course that made it that much more appetizing!

What they received in the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was a religion that promised and couldn’t deliver – a form that didn’t produce.

You see, the knowledge of good and evil is addictive.  Once they tasted it they were hooked.

They soon realized that the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil did not serve them well – in fact it brought an end to everything in life they had enjoyed.

This story is a record of the first time two human beings reasoned something out instead of trusting the still small voice of God.

The story of Adam and Eve is really a story about communicating with God, hearing God’s voice and then applying human reasoning and judgement to God’s instruction and going with the human judgement.

There is much speculation about how it affects us today and “original sin” etc.  The only way that the story affects us to day is to show us so clearly what we as humans do.  We’re all involved in the same exact activities – and we can’t blame Adam and Eve!

We’re responsible for ourselves.  Blaming them and believing some doctrine that put them at fault is just a way of trying to dodge our own responsibility.

While there is much more that could be said about the story of Adam and Eve I’ll save it for other pages.  Here is more about The Adam and Eve Story.
