How Will I Know God’s Voice?

John 6:63

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (KJV)

Quicken means “to make alive”

Jesus is saying in this verse that His words make alive – indeed are life!

Words are an outward indicator of our internal condition. They’re a gage you could say.

Words are very important therefore. Much more important than we typically think.

Matthew 12:34

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. (KJV)

Likely when God speaks to you it will be a flood of thought – impressions on your mind if you will.

Words will come to you to describe the message. In my experience, word seem inadequate – I mean how do you put into words the awesome spirit and power of God?

So here’s the key to knowing God’s voice:

The words that come to you will be the external indicators of something you have felt/sensed in your heart.

They will be spirit and life. When you speak or think about these words, you will sense a quickening within.

You will FEEL more ALIVE. I get that feeling as I write this and it lets me know that this is from God! This is awesome!

If you’re feeling ordinary or gloomy and down in your thoughts – that’s not God.

Spirit and Life – that’s what we’re after – and that’s what God gives us!

John 10:10

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (KJV)

Abundant life is your birthright.

Words and thoughts that are death are not from God. You can sense their power as well when you think or speak them. You will feel less alive. Pay attention to how your words and thoughts make you feel.

One more important point: Words of life that you receive are yours. You may share them and those you share them with may be quickened – or not. That’s not your concern. If those around you are not quickened by the words of life that have quickened you – it’s because they’re in a slightly different place and that’s okay. Don’t let that take from your own experience.

Hello Robert
Any suggestions for stilling the mind absolutely?

Robert February 2, 2010 at 12:35 AM

Padma,

Stilling the mind absolutely may very well be impossible. Our minds are always flitting from one thing to another.

When we become aware of this and become the observer and just watch our mind do it’s thing it seems to help slow it down. There may be periods of absolute stillness but it won’t last too long – and that’s okay.

We’re completely fine the way God made us and completely capable of communicating with Him even though we often think the circumstances aren’t perfect. That’s just something we need to let go of.

There are some other tips on my site – I guess I should organize it a little better – visit Be Still and Know That I Am God – also How to be still for the Presence of the Lord.

Blessings,

Robert

Hey Robert, I really like the last paragraph about sharing with others and it not quickening them. That happens a lot to me! I often get down about it, so I appreciate you bringing out that the other person may be in a different place spiritually. I’m sure they can still learn from it, but likely it will not be as special to them. I think individual revelations are that way.. they are so powerful to the one that received the message, because it’s straight from God.

Hi Robert

Thank you for sharing your website, it is warmly welcome.
I was wondering if you could expand a little on which voice is god’s voice. I have been meditating everyday for over a year and I was wondering which of voices within is the Fathers from your view. I receive pictures or flahes and this can happen whist meditating or thru the day. I am an empath so i know clearly when I am to do something or when someone is in trouble as i get the thought then a huge instictive push and a feeling of fear. I am so used the this feeling as i have had this since i was a small child and it usually is in aid of someone else. I always make decisions with my instinct and trust it more than anything else. I tried asking for a coffee yesterday as your site directed and within 2hrs i was asked to have a coffee via a very unexpected source and condition. ( i laughed! ).
I was raised greek orthadox albeit very loosely but always knew what was right. I am spiritual but not restricted by others interpretation of what faith is therefore the church never made sense to my instinct. Of course its logical that the voice within when source for myself is much harder to maybe much simpler to detect. Would u kindly give me your thoughts?
Warmest thanks
Jeannie

Jeannie,

Thanks for sharing – and I hope you enjoyed your coffee!

With regard to which voice is God’s voice – I prefer not to define God’s voice for another person because I really believe that it is so personal. It is personal because your beliefs about God and what God may or may not speak to you are unique to you. Those beliefs are like filters and allow only what you believe to come through – even from God.

From what you describe of your experience I feel that you’re very much in touch with God – who in my mind is the Oneness of All. The feeling of fear is likely something that you’ve picked up because of a belief that there will be trouble if you don’t do what you’re “supposed” to do. I’m fairly comfortable with the idea that God’s voice doesn’t bring fear – but then I know a lot of folks who are in love with the idea of fearing God – and that comes through in a lot of different ways – some healthy and some perhaps not so healthy.

Don’t over complicate the simplicity of hearing God’s voice ;-)

Hope that makes sense.

Blessings,

Robert

Thank you kindly Robert,

I would just like to clarify the fear I feel when it is that I am to assist someone is just my human fear of my family or friends being harmed and it is the way I distinguish a message of good, as in a new baby coming for someone compared to aiding someone who is in phyical danger. Fear is coming from my human separatness but was born at a very young age. May I ask how you have left fear behind as it is too present in my life?
My warmest thanks to you.

Jeannie,

I haven’t left all fear behind. I think it’s a process.

As we learn and grow and realize at deeper levels that we are each co-creating our experience – we learn to look forward to whatever is coming next instead of resisting and fearing.

When we realize that those around us are doing the same thing, we can step away from trying to control their direction and trust that they too are working with their Creator, creating their own experience and if it looks strange or different to us – that’s OK!

I have come to a place of being fairly comfortable with whatever others choose for themselves. My 3 year old is testing me on this!

Fear is still present around my own experience and I’m gradually learning to let it go.

Being still – in mind and body – not for any purpose other than to enjoy being still helps me. Our busy lives seem to keep us thinking that we don’t have time for stillness, but you know nothing has ever fallen apart due to me taking 15 minutes to be still!

I also enjoy energy work and have a friend who works with me. This can be really helpful if a person is open to that sort of thing.

Then of course there are times when we just need a fear fest for whatever reason and we wallow in it for a day or so and then wake up and let it go – perhaps it’s a kind of “working through” process.

The other thing that helps is to just face them. This website is the outgrowth of facing some of my biggest fears – fears around God, pleasing Him, serving Him, doing everything right so He doesn’t send me to hell, and on and on….

The fears I held around God were huge. Reason helped me take steps that took me further and further away from the things that agitated those fears until I could look at them in the light of a spirituality free of fear. When you really “see the light” so to speak – you gain the knowing that there is no need to fear, and when you internalize that knowing, the fear is reduced. The daily proving that there isn’t anything to fear keeps it down until eventually it is gone.

All that being said – we can hold on to fears at a very deep level and just think they’re gone – then some event triggers that fear and it bursts to the surface. We just have to keep working through it with the intention of trusting – because fear really is a lack of trust in the perfection of the co-creation we are each involved in!

I’m rambling…… sorry but hope that answers some of your questions!

Blessings,

Robert
