I can only tell you what I believe. It seems that Jesus was completely aware of his oneness with God. So at the spiritual level God's will and Jesus's will was the same. This is true for us as well. On the physical level of the body, we seek the bodies preservation at any cost. We could call this the level of the ego, or human nature as scripture would refer to it. Jesus had the desire for the preservation of his physical form just as we do. In the statement you reference, he was simply "dying to self" as scripture teaches - putting the human desires under the spiritual desires and purpose that he shared with God. I think he did give up all identification with the body. That's an essential part of becoming one with God. I think Jesus lived in that state completely. In that way he was in constant awareness of oneness with Spirit/God/the divine - use the term you're most comfortable with. It's fascinating that you - a self described non Christian are studying the life of Christ! I suspect you are a non Christian in the sense of not belonging to any religious organization that claims alignment with the teachings of Jesus.
